Sir Alex Ferguson tore into former Manchester United trickster Nani after he almost suffered a broken leg following a horrendous tackle by Jamie Carragher.

The Portuguese winger was left in tears by the incident that happened during the first half of United’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield back in 2011.

With Fergie’s side 1-0 down following the first of Dirk Kuyt’s three goals in the contest, Carragher steamed into a challenge on the far side of the Anfield pitch, clattering into Nani’s leg and leaving a gaping cut in the United man’s shin.

Carragher was only given a yellow card for the tackle by referee Phil Dowd, and even acknowledged the notorious tackle again in 2020 after Virgil van Dijk had been injured by Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside Derby, saying: “I nearly broke Nani’s leg. These things happen, unfortunately, in football.”

The ex-Portugal international was replaced after a lengthy stoppage which ignited one of the many flare ups that marred the occasion.

It’s now been revealed by left-back Patrice Evra that the incident left United players feeling embarrassed whilst Fergie turned his usual red with rage.

Speaking to former team-mate Rio Ferdinand on the FIVE podcast, Evra revealed the Scotsman’s fury, saying: “You remember Anfield when Nani got tackled by Jamie Carragher?

“I remember he got butchered he nearly broke his leg.

"We started fighting with Liverpool players, Steven Gerrard, and then Scholsey [Paul Scholes] came and he saw Nani crying. He said ‘f*** that, let's go’.

“After that Ferguson gave him two weeks off because he says he needed to recover from that because we were waiting for him because in that team we didn't care we were ready to kill him.

“Because you know someone crying at Anfield... and even Ferguson, you remember when he said: ‘I hope your legs are f*****g broken I really hope your legs are broken’.”
